11.18.11

Highlight of the Week
Our Family Reading Night, Passport to Reading, was a huge success this past Thursday.  Students and parents had the opportunity to experience literature from five different countries as they traveled through the red pod listening to teacher readers.  Families also had the opportunity to cozy up in the library while reading with each other.  A big thank you to Mrs. Nielsen, Mr. Vanderwerff, and Mrs. Novak for planning this successful evening.

Lockdown Drill
This past Thursday, we conducted our first lockdown drill of the school year.  Lockdown drills are conducted twice a year to prepare students for any potential situations that may require a building lockdown.  District 96 Liaison Officer Staci Kupsak from the Buffalo Grove Police Department assisted us with the drill.  Our students and staff did an excellent job.

A message from Paul Louis - Director of Curriculum and Assessment

Dear Parents,
As you know, our first Trimester Report Cards go home today for students in grades 1-5.  Our Kindergarten Report Cards are being provided to you during your scheduled Parent/Teacher Conference.  We are very pleased to share our newly developed standards based report cards with you as we believe that they clearly communicate student achievement of grade level specific learning targets and student work habits.   We have worked hard over the last weeks and months to prepare for these new report cards.  Our teachers have been amazing throughout this entire process from gathering information about each of the learning targets listed on the report card and building consistency across their grade level to learning the new process of inputting grades into the program.

Please understand that with any new system, we may find a few glitches or issues during this first round of report cards.  Some we may not have been able to anticipate until the entire process was completed.  We will work hard to correct or improve any of the issues over the coming months and into next year.  We appreciate your patience and understanding through this process.  Please feel free to direct any questions comments to your building principal or to me directly (plouis@kcsd96.org).  Please remember to fill out the Parent/Teacher Conference Evaluation Form provided to you during your conferences.  Your feedback will be used as we continue to make improvements to the system.

Sincerely,
Paul Louis
Director of Curriculum and Assessment

Prairie Parents WIN BIG at Trivia Night!!!
I couldn't be more excited that the District 96 Foundation Trivia Night trophy cup is now proudly displayed in the Prairie School office!  Though Prairie staff had a healthy representation at the event, it was indeed, the Prairie parent team that came through with the victory.  Congratulations to Lori and Mike Lev, Dave and Susan Heald, Mike and Heidi Fine, Ryan and Michelle Edley, and their friend John Lavalie for their amazing show of intellect and finesse in rivaling their children's teachers and administrators.  The Prairie staff team came in a respectable... well, it's not really that important.  Michelle Edley shared, "The evening was super fun and we're proud the trophy is going to be at our school."  Indeed the evening was a huge success and a lot of fun.  Please stop by to view the trophy cup which is prominently displayed near Mrs. Johnson's desk.

Highlight of the Week
The Twin Groves Drama Club was at Prairie today presenting The Reluctant Dragon an adorable story of a misunderstood dragon and his quest for acceptance.  The presentation was enjoyed by our third graders who thoroughly enjoyed the performance.  A huge thank you goes out to Mrs. Dawn Bussert, TG Drama Director, for bringing the Drama Club to Prairie for this terrific performance and the TG actors for their wonderful performance.

Standards Based Report Card Presentation
This past Wednesday, Mr. Paul Louis, Director of Curriculum and Assessment, presented UNDERSTANDING YOUR CHILD'S ELEMENTARY REPORT CARD.  This informative presentation shares why the transition from traditional to standards based reporting is occurring in District 96, many other districts in the area, and across the nation.  Please take some time to view the powerpoint.  Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask your child's classroom teacher or Dr. Pfaff.

Principal's Message 11.4.11

Halloween Celebration
The Monday Halloween celebration was kicked off with our annual "Parade of Costumes" along Kingsbridge. Thank you to all the parents and grandparents that came out for the special photo opportunity. The students love seeing their family members along the route. We re-entered the school for our Halloween assembly where, staff who were dressed as Scrabble pieces, spelled out Halloween words for the students. The assembly ended with the ever fun "wrap your teacher up as a mummy" game. Students then enjoyed a Halloween party in their classrooms. Thank you to all the parent volunteers who helped out with the party and who supplied snacks and craft materials.

Positively Prairie Student Leadership Team Highlight
As you remember, the Positively Prairie Committee has branched out and expanded its leadership team by including 4th & 5th grade student leaders.  These student leaders work alongside the teacher committee in planning assemblies.  This week, I’d like to share some snippets from our October assembly that include the first introduction of Parker the Prairie Dog and the Positively Prairie Student Leadership Team.  The Student Leadership Team, which is comprised of 4th graders: Hannah M., Tyler D., Rebecca K., RJ H., CaiMin X., and Michael B., along with 5th graders: Noah S., Nancy K., Lauren M., and Blake N. is featured conveying bus safety messages as well as how to be a good partner in class.

Sun-Times Recognizes the Top 50 Schools in the Six-County Area
Congratulations to parents, students, and staff on our October 31st recognition in the Chicago Sun-Times where Prairie School is ranked 30th in the six-county area and 34th in the state. The rankings are based on average scores on state achievement tests.

Principal Coffees
Last week I had asked that parents complete a survey to determine topics of interest to be presented at an informal coffee. Unfortunately, there was an error in the link. The survey link has now been corrected. Please take a few minutes to share your responses and thoughts. Thank you.
