Today we had a wonderful presentation sponsored by the PTO.  The Amazing Adventures of Lewis & Clark, produced by Face to Face Productions, was funny and informative.  Our presenters, Lewis & Clark did a wonderful job of walking our students through their westward American frontier travels.  Our students were equally amazing, so much so, that the presenters complimented our students on their terrific behavior and understanding a subtle one liners.  Thank you to the PTO for sponsoring this educational and engaging event.

Book Room Grand Opening
Recently we opened our new teacher Guided Reading Book Room.  This book room will provide teachers with a multitude of literacy resources for use in daily reading instruction at a multitude of instructional reading levels.  A HUGE thank you goes out to the following parents for helping to label, level, and organize materials in the new book room space:  Mr. Driscoll, Mrs. Oh, Mrs. Borin, Mrs. Strezewski, Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. Krames, Mrs. Hirsh, Mrs. Dicker, and Mrs. DeZutter.  We truly could not have completed this large amount of work without your dedication and support.

Thank You PTO
A huge thank you goes out to the Prairie PTO for providing an appetizer buffet during Parent-Teacher conferences.  The staff really looks forward to these delicious treats and they really help give us an energy boost.  The time given toward baking, shopping, setting up, and cleaning up is truly appreciated!

A Message from Girl Scout Troop 41416
Last week during Parent-Teacher conferences the combined Ivy Hall/Prairie 5th Grade Girl Scout of Troop 41416 provided babysitting at both Ivy Hall School and Prairie school.  As a result of the generosity of the families of Prairie and Ivy Hall, the troop was able to donate over 40 food items as well as a $100 Dominick's Gift Card to the Vernon Township Food Pantry.  Although this was in invaluable experience for the girls in terms of leadership, it was also exciting and fun as they spent time with friends old and new.  Yesterday, the 12 girls delivered the donations to the Vernon Township Food Pantry and were able to assist in stocking the shelves for a humbling yet memorable experience.
Troop 41416 thanks all the families who participated in babysitting for their generosity and hopes you keep us in mind for conferences in the Spring.

Lewis & Clark Assembly on December 9th
On December 9, we will be having an assembly sponsored by the PTO Cultural Arts Committee.  The Amazing Adventures of Lewis & Clark will be presented twice allowing primary and intermediate students opportunities for grade level instructional opportunities.  This musical show explores the concepts of teamwork and courage and some of the challenges faced by Lewis and Clark during their historic journey across the western United States.  To learn more about the ideas presented in the show, visit www.facetofaceproductions.com for a study guide and links to other websites.

Lockdown Drill
This past Thursday, we conducted our first lockdown drill of the school year.  Lockdown drills are conducted twice a year to prepare students for any potential situations that may require a building lockdown.  District 96 Liaison Officer Staci Kupsak from the Buffalo Grove Police Department assisted us with the drill.  Our students and staff did an excellent job.

A message from Paul Louis - Director of Curriculum and Assessment

Dear Parents,
As you know, our first Trimester Report Cards go home today for students in grades 1-5.  Our Kindergarten Report Cards are being provided to you during your scheduled Parent/Teacher Conference.  We are very pleased to share our newly developed standards based report cards with you as we believe that they clearly communicate student achievement of grade level specific learning targets and student work habits.   We have worked hard over the last weeks and months to prepare for these new report cards.  Our teachers have been amazing throughout this entire process from gathering information about each of the learning targets listed on the report card and building consistency across their grade level to learning the new process of inputting grades into the program.

Please understand that with any new system, we may find a few glitches or issues during this first round of report cards.  Some we may not have been able to anticipate until the entire process was completed.  We will work hard to correct or improve any of the issues over the coming months and into next year.  We appreciate your patience and understanding through this process.  Please feel free to direct any questions comments to your building principal or to me directly (plouis@kcsd96.org).  Please remember to fill out the Parent/Teacher Conference Evaluation Form provided to you during your conferences.  Your feedback will be used as we continue to make improvements to the system.

Sincerely,
Paul Louis
Director of Curriculum and Assessment

Prairie Parents WIN BIG at Trivia Night!!!
I couldn't be more excited that the District 96 Foundation Trivia Night trophy cup is now proudly displayed in the Prairie School office!  Though Prairie staff had a healthy representation at the event, it was indeed, the Prairie parent team that came through with the victory.  Congratulations to Lori and Mike Lev, Dave and Susan Heald, Mike and Heidi Fine, Ryan and Michelle Edley, and their friend John Lavalie for their amazing show of intellect and finesse in rivaling their children's teachers and administrators.  The Prairie staff team came in a respectable... well, it's not really that important.  Michelle Edley shared, "The evening was super fun and we're proud the trophy is going to be at our school."  Indeed the evening was a huge success and a lot of fun.  Please stop by to view the trophy cup which is prominently displayed near Mrs. Johnson's desk.

Highlight of the Week
The Twin Groves Drama Club was at Prairie today presenting The Reluctant Dragon an adorable story of a misunderstood dragon and his quest for acceptance.  The presentation was enjoyed by our third graders who thoroughly enjoyed the performance.  A huge thank you goes out to Mrs. Dawn Bussert, TG Drama Director, for bringing the Drama Club to Prairie for this terrific performance and the TG actors for their wonderful performance.

Halloween Celebration
The Monday Halloween celebration was kicked off with our annual "Parade of Costumes" along Kingsbridge. Thank you to all the parents and grandparents that came out for the special photo opportunity. The students love seeing their family members along the route. The assembly ended with the ever fun "wrap your teacher up as a mummy" game. Students then enjoyed a Halloween party in their classrooms. Thank you to all the parent volunteers who helped out with the party and who supplied snacks and craft materials.

Highlights of the Week
Our 2011-2012 school year “Principal Lunch” days have started.  During a Principal Lunch, I go to each classroom and dine with the students.  This is a great opportunity for me to get to know each student better in their daily school environment.  This year, classroom teachers are working with students to set attainable academic goals.  I am carrying these goal setting discussions over into the principal lunches with a focus on a life-long goal.  I set the stage for life-long goal setting through reading an inspirational story to the class.  I’ve read books such as The Wednesday Surprise, Wilma Unlimited, and Salt in His Shoes.  These stories help illustrate how, what may seem to be the impossible, is really possible if you set your mind to achieving it.  It has been really exciting to hear about all the long-term and career goals of Prairie students.  Third grader Ashley W. shared that she wants to be a teacher because she has had so many great teachers that have really helped her.  Stephen M. from Mrs. Kelly’s class shared that he would like to be an engineer like his parents.  I look forward to meeting with each class over the next several weeks and learning about each student’s future plans.

Reading Calendars
Students who turn in 6 out of 9 months of reading calendars will receive a pass to Great America for some 2012 summer fun.  Reading calendars should be turned into the classroom teacher.  The calendars can be found on the Prairie website.

Common Core Standards Highlight
Mr. Paul Louis, Director of Curriculum and Assessment, highlights background information on Illinois’ newly adopted Common Core standards along with a historical perspective of how District 96 has moved over the past several years toward a standards based report card.  Mr. Louis’s podcast, “Common Core Standards as it Relates to Standards Based Reporting,” will be helpful in answering questions you may have regarding this academic reporting format.

Highlights of the Week

At our second Positively Prairie assembly of the year today, we welcomed our new friend Parker the Prairie Dog.  Parker had little work to do to get the kids pumped up as he danced about to Who Let the Dogs Out. Our new Positively Prairie Student Leadership Team made its debut today as well.  These students led three skits on positive and expected behaviors.  The skits discussed positive bus behavior, how to include classmates by being a good partner, and how to behave appropriately at assemblies.  Congratulations to this new Prairie student leadership team on a terrific performance today.  We look forward to seeing you and Parker again at our next assembly.

Highlights of the Week
Our third grade students went on a field trip this week to Archer School House.  This field trip was a preview to the Trimester 2 Prairie Unit that students will be starting in November.  At Archer School House, students had an opportunity to compare and contrast the differences between their 21st century lives and the lives of children in the 1800s.  They also were able to see how Long Grove used to appear in maps.  Another Prairie Unit activity that third graders have to look forward to soon is the Conastoga Wagon Route Museum.  During this visit, experts will share with students the realities of settling the prairie and western territories through travelling in a Conastoga wagon.

Professional Learning
Our Friday Institute Day was really excititng.  Our day was launched by 4th grader Daniel G. from Ivy Hall School who gave a presentation entitled “I Believe.”  Daniel spoke to the entire District 96 staff, over 300 people, about believing in our students and ourselves.  He shared how important our daily work is in helping children feel safe and cared for in the school setting and that we ensure our students are prepared for high school and college.  Daniel did an awesome job!!

For the remainder of the day, teachers expanded their knowledge regarding second language learners in regard to how students qualify for English Language Learner (ELL) and Bilingual programs.  Teachers also expanded their knowledge on various instructional strategies that can be used to assist English acquistion students in meeting learning targets.  Teachers gained information as well on additional methods to assess student reading fluency and comprehension skills which will assist in planning instruction and growing all children’s reading skills.

Halloween
Halloween will be here before you know it!  I want to remind parents that are already beginning to shop or construct their child’s costume that we do not allow any weapons or masks at school.  I also encourage all parents that are PTO room volunteers for the Halloween party to come into school before October 31st to get your license scanned through the Raptor security system if you have not done so already.  As you recall, parent licenses are required by the Raptor system to print your mandatory visitor’s badge.  Parents that are just planning to watch the parade outdoors do not need a badge.  Additional information regarding the parade route and other Prairie Halloween traditions will be included in my next newsletter.

Picture Retakes
Retakes will occur this Wednesday, October 12th.  Students will need to return the original set of photographs at the time of the picture sitting.

2nd Grade Math Night
Please be reminded that 2nd grade Math Night is this Tuesday, October 11th at 7pm at Kildeer School.  Our math specialist, Mrs. Arlene Steinberg, will teach parents many strategies used with our math curriculum that you may not be unfamiliar with.  If you are looking for some help in helping out with homework, don’t miss this presentation.
