Heading Into Summer...

Dear Parents,

It's amazing how quickly a school year goes by.  Our students have done such amazing work this year, learning and growing.  We so appreciate the support you give us on a daily basis.  The Prairie Faculty and Staff are a talented group of educators and I thank them as well for their continued dedication to growing our students academically and socially.

Have a wonderful summer vacation.  I hope your travels, whether near or far, are full of fun and help to create many wonderful family memories.

Sincerely,
Christine Pfaff

PTO... Thank You!!!
We have had such a wonderful school year with the support you provide us on a daily basis.  Ice cream Fridays, School Store, Cultural Arts Assemblies, Pizza-Bingo, Art Auction, changing pictures in frames so many students have their artwork on display, and so many other things that are simply too numerous to mention.  We couldn't do it without you!
~Thanks, Prairie Teachers & Staff

Orchestra Tour
Third, fourth, and fifth graders attended a concert from the 7th & 8th grade orchestra students from Twin Groves.  Ms. Ying and the orchestra provided an fantastic concert allowing for students to see our orchestra instruments in action.

5th Grade Party
Our 5th graders enjoyed a wonderful 5th grade party on Thursday.  We had an improvisational comedy activity (which all students experienced) hosted by Harris Kal.  5th graders went on to enjoy a private recess, ice cream sundae buffet, and received their yearbooks.  A HUGE thank you goes out to Mrs. Andrabi, Mrs. Lyons, & Mrs. Scott - 5th grade room parents - for organizing and running the 5th grade party.  A BIG thank you as well to Mrs. Kamp, Mrs. Schechter, and Mr. Williams - Support Staff - for assisting with supervision.

We Loved Meeting You Willow Grove Kindergarteners
On Thursday, our incoming first graders visited from Willow Grove. Students visited the first grade classrooms, went to the library for story time, and toured the school.  It was wonderful to meet you all and we can't wait to start working with you in August.

Flagpole Assembly
On Thursday, June 6th please come to school at 9:15am to join in one of our most treasured Prairie School traditions... The Last of School Flag Pole Assembly.  Parents and students gather around the flagpole, sign our Prairie School fight song, and wish fond farewells to our 5th graders.  Even if your student is a bus rider, please consider coming out for this wonderful school tradition.  Students will be dismissed at 9:30am.

Girls on the Run
Best of luck to our Girls on the Run group who will be running their 5K event on Saturday, June 1st at Toyota Park.  The girls have been training very hard for the past several months and are ready to do their personal best this weekend.  A HUGE thank you goes out to Miss Sauer, Miss Hewitt, Miss Kuhl, and Miss Johnston - The GOTR Coaches - for your sincere dedication and caring for all your girls!!

GOTR Recruitment for 13-14 School Year
Hi families of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders for the 2013-2014 school year!
Girls on the Run will be in its THIRD year at Prairie next year and we're trying to get an estimate of the number of girls who would be interested so we can plan coaching staff accordingly.  The season will begin in late February/Early March 2014 and will run for 12 weeks (through the end of the school year).  We meet on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:00-4:45.  Your girl must be available for BOTH practices.   There is a program fee, but scholarships are available.  Please visit www.girlsontherunchicago.org or www.gotr.org for more information about this incredible program!   Please email "Coach Sauer" at esauer@kcsd96.org with questions or to put your girls name on the "interest" list.
Have a GREAT summer!

Student Council News
Due to very successful Dime and Quarter days, Prairie School raised $362! This money will be donated to St. Jude's Children's Hospital to help children fighting cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Congrats Prairie School on a successful fundraiser.

Summer Reading Program Ideas
As the school year comes to a close, I encourage you to find a  summer reading program with your child. Students can lose more than half of their school year gains during the summer vacation. Children who read during the summer months, however, can sustain their literacy levels and are better prepared for learning when school resumes in the fall.  There are so many options when it comes to a summer reading program.  First, don't forget about the District 96 summer reading program as outlined at this link.  Click here to visit a list of summer reading programs in the area.  Thank you for your dedication and partnership in creating lifelong learners!
